Even as a toddler, Carla Jarvis Johnson exhibited a love and appreciation for sports. Moving around the world with her Air Force family, she enjoyed a wide variety of athletics — some of which are not known in the United States. While she attended Lincoln High School in Argentina, she lettered in five sports and earned both “Best All Around Athlete” and “Best Sportsmanship” awards her Senior year. Carla attended the University of Montevallo in Alabama, and competed with the intercollegiate volleyball team and participated in various intramural activities.
After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from the University of Montevallo, in l978, Carla continued to hone her expertise as she coordinated the year-round aquatic and youth programs at the YMCA in Bessemer, Alabama. Her knowledge increased as she expanded into waterfront activities in Melbourne, Florida, and Shreveport, Louisiana. While directing the operations of four pools, her responsibilities included marketing, programing, budgeting and staffing. She has trained American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Instructors, Lifeguards and Lifeguard Instructors, Water Safety Instructors and Water Safety Instructor - Trainers. Under the National YMCA standards she has certified Aquatic Specialist Instructors and Lifeguards. Her Masters Degree in Education (physical education emphasis), was completed while she served as the Facility Director of the Health and Physical Education Building at Louisiana State University in Shreveport.
Carla taught Physical Education and co-ed Life Sports at Ridgewood Middle School in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was the Physical Education Department Chairman, Drug Education Coordinator, and Peer Leader/Mediator sponsor. Her personally-designed Physical Education Lesson Plan format has been approved for statewide use and her Life Sports curriculum has been implemented by the Caddo Parish school system.
Carla instructs water exercise for the Christus Schumpert Wellness Center while maintaining four certifications (Master Water Fitness Instructor, Water Walking Instructor, Mature Participants Instructor, and Water Fitness Coordinator), through the United States Water Fitness Association. She is also certified through the Arthritis Foundation to teach the AFYAP program (Arthritis Water Exercise). She is a current member of the Aquatic Exercise Association.
Throughout the years she has touched the lives of thousands of participants from various backgrounds, abilities and ages. Her warm heart and genuine concern for their progress have resulted in countless rewards for all those involved, including herself. Carla lives in Mountain Home, Arkansas, with her husband Tommy and three dogs.
Jean has been participating in water exercise for over fifteen years. The benefits she has gained are evident in her everyday life. At seventy-three, she is very active in church and community events; walks her two dogs in the park every morning and afternoon; continues to exercise in the water at least three times a week; and has completely recovered from a knee replacement and rotator cuff surgery in the past 24 months.
My gratitude and appreciation to Jean are boundless. I have received countless hours of encouragement, support, and motivation from her. This website is the result of her persistent guidance and belief in me.
Mom, with each beat of my heart, I thank you.

Cheryl is a 20 year veteran BSN (nurse) with a Master's degree in Community Counseling. She has experience in ICU/CCU, cardio-pulmonary step down units, rehabilitation, home care, and hospice. Cheryl uses her skills as a volunteer for hospice and her church family. She attributes her recovery from a Motor Vehicle Accident, in part, to Carla's aquatics leadership. Her ability to maintain flexibility and strength for daily challenges is definitely attributed to her own love of water and Carla's instruction. When she's not out and about helping others, Cheryl sews, reads, and plays in the dirt (gardens).
I truly appreciate Cheryl’s input for the Excel Workout and her willingness to model for the exercise photographs. I am proud to have her as my sister, my supporter, and my friend.
